# Outlook App for MacOS: Signing & Encrypting Email

Outlook supports two encryption options:

- **S/MIME encryption:** To use S/MIME encryption, the sender and recipient must have a mail application that supports the S/MIME standard. Outlook supports the S/MIME standard.
- **Office 365 Message Encryption (Information Rights Management):** To use Office 365 Message Encryption, the sender must have Office 365 Message Encryption, which is included in the O365 E3 license.

NOTEIf your recipient is listed on an LDAP directory service, such as the global address list (GAL) used by Microsoft Exchange Server, the recipient’s certificate is published to the directory service and available to you together with other contact information. 1. From the **Tools** menu, click **Accounts**.
2. Click the account that you want to send an encrypted message from and click **Advanced**.
3. Open the **Security** tab.
4. For each usage, select each certificate you want to use, along with which algorithm.  
You only see the certificates that you’ve added to the keychain for your MacOS user account, and those certificates that are valid for digital signing or encryption.
5. Click **OK**.  
Outlook is now configured to encrypt emails.
